While soul food is a cherished tradition, its legacy also includes a disproportionate impact of diet-related diseases on Black communities. In the U.S., 11 million deaths each year are linked to conditions like diabetes and heart disease—many of which are preventable through better nutrition.
Chef GW Chew has lived this reality. After watching loved ones battle diet-related illnesses, he made a life-changing decision at just 18 years old—adopting a vegan lifestyle and dedicating 15 years to crafting plant-based foods that deliver the same rich flavors and textures as traditional meats. His mission led to the creation of Something Better Foods and its flagship line, Better Chew—proving that healthier choices don’t have to come at the cost of taste.
