📍 On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in America. Today we celebrate it. ───── Hey Builders! On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had been signed two and a half years earlier, but the news, and the freedom, had been withheld until that day. When it finally arrived, people celebrated in the streets. They called it Juneteenth, and they have been celebrating ever since. It became a federal holiday in 2021, but the tradition is far older. For more than 160 years, families have marked the day with cookouts, parades, music, red drinks and red foods, prayer, and time together. It is a day of joy and remembrance at once. Juneteenth matters because it tells the truth about freedom. Freedom delayed is still worth celebrating when it comes, and freedom is something every generation has to keep building on. The people who first celebrated in Galveston could not have imagined the lives their descendants would go on to create. That is the spirit of the day. We honor how far we have come, and we keep going. So today, step back from the work. Call your people. Share a meal.
